Episode 77, March 25, 2022

Welcome to the Fresh Sounds newsletter!

Welcome to episode 77 of the newsletter! Off-schedule, quite a bit thanks to a nocturnal taping on Friday, but hey, better late than never! Mark and Brendan are (finally) back with their trusty five songs; four new and one from the dusty shelves of the Fresh Sounds Music Archive. Our playlists are back, too, so look for the big link button below!

For those just visiting us, you can definitely sample the pod at most of the major vendors, like Apple, Spotify, Stitcher, and Google Podcasts, for our Android friends. You can also pull it up on those talking cylinders from Amazon, just by asking for it by name. (Assuming you have Spotify or Apple Podcasts connected to your Amazon account.)

If you are new, please take a second to sign up for our email newsletter right here. We keep your info private and only email you when we publish new episodes.

Now, on to the music!

Rosalía, The Weeknd
“La Fama (with The Weeknd)”
Motomami
Released on March 18, 2022
Columbia Records, a Division of Sony Music Entertainment
Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain and Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Up first, a tune from a strong contender for album of the summer, in my opinion: Rosalía, the Catalonian singer and pop star swinging big — for the fences! on her new album, Motomami. This record pays tribute to the many styles of Afro-Caribbean and Latin pop out there today. I will also note, certain parts of it remind me of Robyn’s Body Talk record, and other high-water marks for electronic pop in modern times. A real gem of a tune, here, and The Weeknd does all his lines en Español. Mighty impressive! I give this record my highest endorsement. -BH

Weval
“Minute by Minute” (single)
Released on February 28, 2022
Technicolour Records
Amsterdam, The Netherlands

We start in one of my favorite cities in the world: Amsterdam. It’s in the Dutch capital where we find Harm Coolen and Merjin Alberts, otherwise…
