Episode 90, June 24, 2022

Welcome to the Fresh Sounds newsletter!

Welcome to episode 90 of the newsletter! A dark Friday for many in the United States, but hey, music can rally, can inspire, and can be balm for a wounded soul. That will be as close as we get to politics here, as this is a music newsletter to its core. Anyway, on to the links, then the tunes!

For those just visiting us, you can definitely sample the pod at most of the major vendors, like Apple, Spotify, Stitcher, and Google Podcasts, for our Android friends. You can also pull it up on those talking cylinders from Amazon, just by asking for it by name. (Assuming you have Spotify or Apple Podcasts connected to your Amazon account.)

Ishmael Ensemble, Medlar
“Soma Centre (Medlar Version)” (single)
Released on May 20, 2022
Severn Songs
Bristol, England, UK (both)

We start in Bristol, England this week with the exceptional Ishmael Ensemble. The techno-jazz collective is out with a new version of a recent song entitled “Soma Centre.” Pete Cunningham is the saxophonist and producer of Ishmael Ensemble, and there is an incredible blend of authentic modern jazz with distinctly electronic roots. On this new mix, Cunningham gets an assist from Bristol DJ Medlar, this is a smooth melding of two very different styles of music: jazz and electronic. -MB

Sports Team
“Cool It Kid” (single)
Released on June 17, 2022
Bright Antenna Records
London, England, UK

The English six-piece who goes as the un-Googlable Sports Team, are back with another taste of their forthcoming album due out next week, to be entitled Gulp! The band’s cheeky humor and post-punk skronk are completely intact, from their early days. And I have admiration for the way they carry themselves among the London scene, which is to say they don’t seem to play nicely with other bands. You be you, Sports Team…
